"The Trek to Stonetooth, First Assaut"

As Higor settled down to study his spells, Kaelith asked Hadnan to go into town and buy him a longsword. The battles the day before had given him and Hadnan enough experience to advance to level 4 and Kaelith planned to test his new combat abilities while weilding two weapons at once.

After the party picked up camp and extinguised the fire, they set off on the road northeast towards the mountain peak of Stonetooth. It was clearly the location of the stronghold on Hadnan's map. The Sir Miles had assured the party that it was a good 3 day trek to the mountain peak. For a day and a half they marched along the road as the forest grew more dense around them.

Late afternoon on the second day, they turned off the main road. After finding a somewhat discreet entrance into the thick brush, they entered the forest of ___. The thick canopy of the trees above blotted out a good portion of the sunlight. They marched single file with Kaelith leading the way, chopping at vines and branches which slowed their progress. What they didn't notice as they entered the wood, was the small lilthe figure down the road who waited in the shadows and watched their every move.

As they trudged along slowly through the dense forest, Kaelith and Higor, two seasoned adventurers, couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. Stopping briefly, they asked Wibbilli to loose her raven familiar, Meritole, and search for any signs of danger. The jet black bird soared between the tall trees and circled the party as they continued to march along. The stranger continued to make his way quietly behind the party. He crept low to the ground and followed the trail the minotaur was carving through the wood.

Suddenly Meritole alerted Wibbilli to the presence of someone following them. She turned around to tell Higor and Kaelith stopped advancing. Noticing the group stop, the small figure darted under some bushes and watched the group intently but could not make out what was being said. Belana decided to remain behind, hidden in the woods to see who this mysterious figure was while the rest of the party ventured forth. She flicked the string on her bow once to make sure it was ready for battle. She found a thick ridge of bushes, hid behind them and waited.

Once seeing that Belana was in position, the group coninued making their way deeper into the forest. As the dark figure crept up to where Belana lay hidden, he looked to the side and saw a tiny glint of steel through the bushes. He froze, laying close to the ground while Belana stood up with her bow trained on him. She could see at this distance that he was an elf. He had a bow strapped to his back and a longsword at his waist. A small buckler was attached to his forearm. There was an uneasy silence as neither spoke yet both gazed intently at one another.

Fearing something had gone wrong, the group decided to head back towards where they left Belana. Higor was the first on the scene and could now clearly see the stare-down between the two. As the rest of the party followed suit, they called Belana back to them and she did so. Higor asked the elf what his business was but the newcomer was quite vague regarding his intentions. Just then, Raltar moved from the back of the group and the stranger noticed the symbol of Moradin, the God of the Dwarves, emblazoned on Raltar's shield signifying him as one of the holy order of Moradin. Raltar questioned the elf and it soon became clear that he was a member of the holy order of Corellon Larethian, the God of the Elves. The stranger introduced himself as Telemir and told the party that he had overheard a group in the tavern of Blasingdell talk about an adventuring party who was heading deep into the northern mountains towards the old dwarven stronghold. They spoke of plans to waylay this group upon their return to Blasingdell. His plan was to warn this group of their impending doom. Although grateful for the warning, Kaelith told the slender elf that sneaking up on them was not the best way to go about delivering this information.

After some deliberation, the party welcomed the cleric into their fold. Just as Telemir began to move towards the party and be introduced to his new companions, out from forest behind them burst 8 orcs. Quick to respond, Higor cast a sleep spell and 4 of them slumped to the ground. The remaining 4 were dispatched quickly. The party moved on, unsure if this attack was planned for them or if it was merely a sign that they were closing in on the stronghold. Kaelith thought it best that they push on into the night to gain some extra ground.

At midnight, when the moon was high overhead and the air was cool and damp, the group found a small clearing. After brushing away a few scrap branches and twigs, they made camp for the night. Kaelith was fast asleep almost as soon as the last branch had been cleared away. Despite his deep breathing, the others managed to fall asleep as well. Telemir and Higor made first watch.

Sat at either end of the cramped clearing, Higor began to study his tome and Telemir sat deep in prayer. Just as Higor began to give Kaelith's snores more attention that his studies, he was startled by a loud crash and found himself nearly impaled by a mighty 8 foot long spear. Telemir rolled out of the way just in time to see a similar spear embed itself into the ground where he had been sitting. Before they could do much more than shout a warning, 4 mighty figures, larger than even Kaelith, could be seen charging the small camp from all directions.

Everyone except for Belana, Raltar and Kaelith awoke from their sleep and upon seeing the monstrous figures bearing down on them, sprang to their feet for battle. Wibbilli quickly stepped to the center of the camp and cast a sleep spell on one. Luckily the beast dropped to the ground in a deep slumber. Hadnan ran up beside Telemir to take the charge of one of the creatures who towered over twice as tall as him. Higor jumped over a still snoring Kaelith and continued to shout warnings. Finally the remaining party members awoke startled as sounds of battle had already begun over by Hadnan and Telemir. Higor could now see these were ogres - Ten foot tall giants in tattered leather with huge clubs and snarling, slobbery teeth. They looked almost as bad as they smelled and were probably less intelligent than the clubs they were wielding. As Raltar stirred, he was beat down to the ground with a mighty blow to his side from one of the ogres. Kaelith manged to roll to the side as an equally large club came smashing down into the ground where he lay. Belana jumped to the defense of Wibbilli and Higor who didn't have much of anything left to cast for the day.

Kaelith stood toe-to-toe with the ogre and slammed his huge greataxe into the ogre's side. The ogre responded with a stunning attack of his own. Hadnan and Telemir continued to fight their opponent side by side. Wibbilli, Belana, and Higor focused their attacks on the other ogre while Raltar managed to get up from the ground and join the attack with them. In almost perfect concert, the three battling ogres fell to the ground as the final blows were dealt. The party looked over to where Telemir stood, and suddenly the dead ogre arose again. Almost as soon as it rose to it's knees however, it slumped back to the ground and a somewhat dirty and now definitely smelly Hadnan stood up from where the ogre had toppled over onto him.

Kaelith walked over to where the final ogre remained sleeping and with a fearsome attack, sliced it's head from it's body. At that point, he planned to gather as trophies, the tusk-like incisors of the orcs and ogres whom he killed on this adventure and fashion them into a necklace later. As the party settled again, they spoke of their great teamwork. This was their most fearsome encounter yet and they had dispatched the threat without much difficulty. Soon they were asleep again and found next morning had come too quickly for all of them.

After a quick breakfast, they were marching onward again through the forest. Meritole, Wibbilli's raven familiar had been flying high above the canopy and keeping them on track towards Stonetooth. The forest began to recede around late-morning and soon they found themselves in the foothills of the ___ mountains. Stonetooth could be seen in the distance and they pressed on with a newfound eagerness. Shortly thereafter, the party stopped at the base of Stonetooth. The forest was all but gone now and rocky crags and fissures dotted the dusty barren landscape. A large chimney of smoke could be seen rising from somewhere on the side of the tall peak. A narrow path zig-zagged across the face of Stonetooth. Seeing that there was no other obvious way up, and looking for some other way could take hours or even days, the party cautiously made their way up the old path. The mid-afternoon sun beat down on them from high above.

Soon they found themselves high up on the side of the peak. The cliff on the side of the 10' wide path fell sharply downward. Up ahead where the path doubled back for the last time, they noticed two orcs on standing lazily on patrol. Eager to prove his prowess, Telemir cast a hold person spell without warning on one orc while the rest of the party could only bow and shake their heads in disbelief at their new companion's brazen solitary tactics. Quick to act, Belana followed the spell with an arrow at the second orc. The orc toppled over the side with an arrow protruding from his brow while the other looked on helplessly. Kaelith walked up to the held orc and winked as he seperated the orc's head from his shoulders. The party shot looks of disbelief towards Telemir who was quite happy with himself. It had worked itself out fine... this time.

With the rest of the party in tow, Hadnan and Kaelith slowly made their way into the great fissure that rose up in the mountain before them. They noticed arrow slits in the walls up above so Hadnan began searching the roughly cut terrace steps for traps. The glow of the mid-day sun lit the inside of the cavern. Shadows danced on the walls as the party followed them. After 50' the entrance turned into a large room. At the opposite end there was a large stone double door cut into the shaped walls. Terraced steps led up to the door. More arrow slits could be seen on either side of the room. The group slowly ascended their way up the steps. Without a proper rogue in the group however, there was little they could do to check the doors for traps or listen for activity on the other side of the huge stone doors. Finally Kaelith decided to open the doors and take his chances.

The door opened to a long room. On the other side of the door there was a 10 foot ledge which sloped off sharply into a 30 foot long dark chasm. A broken down rickety rope bridge stretched across the chasm and the sound of running water could be heard from down below. Almost as soon as Kaelith walked into the room, he felt a sharp pain as an arrow fired from across the chasm hit him squarely in the shoulder. He could now see two orcs hiding behind two large boulders on the opposite side of the chasm. Behind him rushed in the rest of the group. Higor twirled his fingers in a spherical motion and after saying a few arcane words, sent a flaming sphere over to one of the orcs and upon impact, it burst into a great cloud of fire. Unfortunately, the sphere chose to roll across the bridge to get to it's intended target much to the dismay of the elven wizard and the old bridge began to burn. The orc roared in pain as his flesh seared. The other orc, caught off guard with the blaze beside him, was killed quickly as a couple arrows found their way into his chest courtesy of Telemir and Belana.

A small but steady stream of smoke rose from the still burning orc and bridge as the party contemplated their next move. The bridge began to creak and the fragile cords which held the bridge across the chasm snapped. The flaming bridge fell with a loud crash to the wall below where the party stood. Seconds later, the party could hear splashes as the bridge fell into some sort of river or water source below. Almost instantly, on either side of the short precipice the party stood on, four orcs burst through secret doors to surprise the party. The minotaur having extra sensitive senses was not surprised however and with a single strike, sliced one orc to death and immediately came back with a cleaving attack that hit the other with devastating efficiency. Belana and Telemir dropped their longbows momentarily and side by side, cut down the two orcs that surpised them.

As Kaelith and Higor began fashioning a rope in order to get Wibbilli across the chasm to search the bodies, Raltar went through the secret door by Kaelith and found a room with holes in the walls. These were arrow slits that looked directly into the entrance room. Meanwhile, Hadnan checked down the other secret passage. He found a similar room filled with murder holes, but his passage continued on. At the end of a 50' passageway, he knelt down and began searching for more secret doors. In the corner he found a small latch, hidden by some cobwebs. He pulled it and where the wall once was, a stone door shifted and opened into a smaller passageway.

Back in the chasm room, Higor had completed fitting a rope around Wibbilli as she was effortlessly hoisted into the air by Kaelith. Higor said a few magic words, traced some arcane symbols in the air, and brushed Wibbilli's cheek with a single feather. He gave the ok to Kaelith who then launched the small gnome over the chasm. She cleared the dark chasm and just as she was about to fall to the ground, she felt a tingling sensation in her skin and she fell slowly as if she were a feather gently gliding to the ground. She began searching the bodies.

Higor went in search of Hadnan down the secret passage. As he turned a corner, he saw the stout dwarf kneeling in a corner up ahead. As he approached the Hadnan, the stone walls seemed to stiffen for a brief second and a door swung out from where there was none before. Hadnan peered at the elf and smiled satisfactorily. They both looked into the corridor and found a couple stairs leading up to another wall. Suspicious of this new corridor they began searching for another secret door. This time the elf was the one to find a small wire beneath a false stone block. He winked at the dwarf with a smug look on his face and sent Hadnan back to alert the party to this new find. Just as the dwarf had walked out of earshot, Higor tugged on the wire.

Effortlessly, the wall at the top of the stairs opened into a dimly lit room. The wizard peered into the room and saw a group of orcs gathered around another orc dressed in a cloak. Immediately they were alerted to his presence and they grabbed their weapons as they charged the door. The elf nearly stumbled down the steps as he turned and ran back down the hallway back towards the party screaming cries of danger.

Wibbilli had just finished looting the bodies across the chasm as the group heard faint yelling coming from the secret hallway Hadnan was just now appearing from. Seconds later, the elven wizard came bursting through the door with several orcs in tow. Kaelith stepped up to the door and several orcs met their doom at the edge of his axe. After the threat was gone, Higor told the group what he saw. The minotaur tugged on the rope that was still around the gnome's waist and Wibbilli was pulled back across the chasm. She fell slowly into the darkness as her feather fall spell went into effect again but was quickly pulled up to safety by Kaelith. The group went down the secret passageway together.

They came to the room Higor had described but it was barren now. Smelly lumps of cloth were strewn about the edges of the room marking this place as a makeshift barraks for what looked to be a dozen orcs. A door was in the wall opposite them. Hadnan and Kaelith went up to the door while the rest of the party stayed back and searched the room quickly. Wibbilli let loose her raven to search the hallways they came from for any signs of attack coming behind them. The dwarf was the first into the hallway and he could see that it turned right and then left again. To his immediate left there was a large 8 foot tall statue of a dwarf standing in an alcove. He moved towards the statue and when he was at arms length from it, the stone block beneath his foot sank into the floor. Suddenly a foul, green gas issued forth from the statue's open mouth. The dwarf and the minotaur staggered for a moment but were able to shrug off the poisonous effect of the gas. Kaelith quickly shut the door leaving the dwarf in the hallway by himself until the air was clear so the rest of the party would not be affected.

When Kaelith opened the door again, he was met with a grim look on the dwarf's face. He padded the shoudler of his small friend and chuckled as they continued down the hallway. Telemir pushed his way to the front with the minotaur and dwarf and the three of them walked up to a door just after the hallway turned. The rest of the party followed slowly, fearing another trap in the floor. Kaelith looked at his companions with his hands on the door, shrugged and tugged the door open. The small room beyond was dimly lit with torches. In a dark corner of the room a large figure could be seen moving towards them. They could hear snarling and jaws snapping. Just then two large wolves with collars and chains around their necks made their way into the light. A huge 10 foot ogre held the chains keeping the wolves at bay for the moment. The minotaur could also see two orcs on either side of the ogre ready for battle. Without a second thought, the minotaur burst into the room towards the ogre who immediately released his wolves. As soon as he got into the room, he found two orcs hiding beside the door on either side. He was surrounded yet he continued forward and cut down one of the wolves in a mighty sweep of his axe as it prepared to punce on him. As the other wolf sprang into the air, the minotaur came back across with a stunning cleave and stopped the wolf in mid-air. Hadnan and Telemir braced for attack and rushed into the room following the minotaur. A quick battle ensued and the ogre managed to gurgle a few words while choking on his own blood as Kaelith's huge Greataxe crashed into his chest. Behind the ogre, they found a small chest full of gold and valuables.

Just as the group finished filling sacks with their new-found wealth, Meritole, the gnome's raven warned her that there was danger back by the chasm room. As they made their way back, Kaelith noted the hallway that continued on. Upon reaching the chasm room, they sent Wibbilli back across the chasm just as they had earlier and had her tie off a rope they could all use to make their way across. Meritole again perched on Wibbilli's shoulder. Once on the other side, the party made their way down the hallway. The walls became unfinished like that of a cave and the path split. To the left a little ways down was barred with rusty gates. The group decided to go right and as the cave curved around a bend, they could hear murmurs and cries coming from up ahead.

They made their way into some sort of holding area. Large boxes and sacks were strewn about the room. To the north was a kitchen area and it still glowed red as coals and embers burned under a stew pot. The stifled cries coud be heard from a small alcove on the right. The party found two huddled figures in the corner of the alcove behind a some makeshift bars. They were made of sturdy wood and had an iron lock around them. The wizard spoke to the shivering humans and tried to comfort them. __names__ They were aparently taken by the orcs many days ago from a nearby farming village. They feared they were soon to be used as food for the orcs living here. Higor explained that they were here to help and told them not to fear Kaelith, that he was a friend. As the minotaur moved forward to pry open the bars, the humans cowered at his sight despite the elf's reassurances that he was friendly. To them, he looked very much like a demon. After snapping the lock off the bars, Kaelith took the two very malnourished prisoners across the chasm and showed them their way out.

The party searched the boxes and found stockpiles of food and such that was obviously taken from the nearby towns that the orcs were terrorizing. to the left of this stock room, the party found a large room, also apparently abandoned. This room was much larger than the one before and had yet more supplies. The far end of the room was not like the rest of the cave, it was finished, much like the rest of the stronghold they had seen so far. Kaelith looked down the hallway in that direction and saw where they had previously been when they fought the orcs. There was also a door on this wall and inside were more barracks. Under one of the cots Higor found a kettle and inside a small stash of gems and gold.

The cave split off in two exits at the opposite end of the storeroom. One way led to a small corridor sealed with old wrought-iron bars a couple inches apart. The other way led to a dead-end. The elves began searching for secret doors and Telemir found a false rock on the floor that was attatched to a lever. He pulled it and Kaelith stepped inside with the rest of the party in tow.

As soon as the brutish minotaur stepped into the dark room, he saw an orc dressed in a tattered robe with all sorts of strange items about his waist who began casting a spell. A second later, the raging minotaur slumped to the floor fast asleep. The rest of the party filed in quickly and saw several orcs in front of what appeared to be an orc shaman. Higor also recognized in the back corner, the orc he had seen earlier.

Without waking the snoring minotaur, the party quickly dispatched the group of orcs. Afterwards, they nudged him awake.
