   [ Adventure Log ]

"Introductions, Attack in the Night"

Near dusk on a forested road, three adventurers found themselves ready to make camp and noticed the faint glow of a fire off in the wood. Curious, the slender figures slipped into the brush to investigate. Unbeknowngst to them, a monstrous figure in the woods behind spotted them and crept slowly towards them out of earshot. The group saw a pair of dwarves eating a meal while sitting comfortably under the canopy of a large tree. Purposefuly, the first of the three made his way out of the brush into the clearing marked by the camp and hailed the two stocky warriors.

The slender elf identified himself as Higor and judging from the numerous scrolls which hung about his waist, the component pounch fastened to his belt, and the spellbook close at hand, he was obviously a wizard of some sort. A slightly taller woman followed him into the clearing. Her bright golden hair was braided around her head and to the trained eye, somewhat hid the point of her obvious half-elven ears. She was clad in mail and a longsword hung at her side, proof she was a fighter. In a soft voice, she called herself Belana. Out from behind Belana's legs darted a small slim figure. Once she stepped into the firelight, the dwares could make out the features of the female gnome who called herself Wibbilli. She also wore the garb of a spellcaster however a spellbook could not be seen hanging from her belt and so the dwarves assumed she was of those gifted individuals for whom magic was inborn, a sorcereress. A small black raven sat perched on her shoulder.

Still sitting, the younger looking of the two dwarves spoke saying his name was Hadnan. A mighty dwarven battleaxe lay beside him on the ground and he was still dressed in his full suit of shiny chainmail. A thick burly shield with sharp spikes lay next to his weapon. Raltar, the other dwarf quickly introduced himself and continued eating while stirring the pot some more. As they made short conversation, the lumbering hulk of a creature made his way deftly around the flank of the campsite listening intently for any signs alerting his presence.

As Higor remarked dryly about the fire the dwarves had made, a booming voice called out from the thickness of the wood. Although his words were nonthreatening, the sheer weight and thunder of the voice made nearly all within the small encampment jump to their feet with weapons drawn. The underbrush stirred as the nine foot tall behemoth made his way into the light of the fire. There before the group stood a creature many had only heard of in tales of high adventure from their elders. Thick shaggy brown hair covered nearly all of his musclebound frame. Two horns protruded from his monstrous head. He wore no armor but two immense weapons hung from his belt, one a mighty battleaxe nearly 4 times the size of Hadnan's, the other a huge warhammer. Making his way towards the group, hands outstretched to his sides came a towering minotaur.

After a brief minute the group calmed themselves and the minotaur introduced himself as Kaelith. He asked if he could share their fire and the dwarves accepted as they had with the elf, half-elf and gnome. Kaelith went out into the wood briefly to hunt for dinner and came back with a boar, enough to feed himself and share with the others. Higor was wonderstruck with Kaelith and began writing a logbook about the mighty creature, the like of which he'd never laid eyes on before. The 6 of them shared a campfire that night and all felt rather comfortable with one another.

The next morning the group spoke to one another about the various quests each was on and how they managed to come together the night before. While Higor, Belana and Wibbilli were headed to the town north of them for herbs and Kaelith was merely exploring these new lands, Hadnan and Raltar had a much more focused quest to which they were dedicated. Hadnan's brother had in his possession a key to an ancient dwarven stronghold. Hadnan and Raltar had the map to the stronghold. Hadnan's brother however could not be found. The others agreed to assist the dwarves in finding Hadnan's brother. First however, the party decided it wise to go north and fulfill the herb gathering that Higor and Wibbilli had been seeking.

When the town of Blasingdell could be seen, Kaelith decided it best to remain in the wood so as not to provoke any ill favor from the townsfolk. Raltar remained with him while the others went to town. Once in town, the party split. Hadnan went to the local tavern to search for any clues to the whereabouts of his brother while the others shopped at the herbalist. Hadnan met up with another dwarf named Kheldegan Tolm in the tavern who told him about the lost dwarven stronghold. It had been taken over by an army of orcs. He had been trying to rouse a militia to go there and destroy the orcs. Hadnan told him briefly of his map and they agreed to talk more the next day when he could bring the map. After meeting back up with the party, Higor drew an exact copy and a phony copy of the map fearing they might now be the target of some assassination attempt.

On the third watch of the night, Kaelith was alerted when he heard many figures approaching from the south. He roused Higor and together they armed themselves for battle. Before they could do much else they were pricked with several darts but managed to shake off the poison which clung to their muscles. Kaelith feigned a fall to the ground and with a yell, the rest of the party was aware of the incoming threat. As the attackers advanced, the rest of the party was also hit by the poisoned darts. All but Wibbilli were able to shrug off the effects. Wibbilli's muscles tensed up and she fell back to the ground. Suddenly Kaelith burst through the brush towards the enemy with a fury. With one strike, he nearly cut down what he could now clearly see was an human rogue. In response, the rest of the party made swift work of the remaining attackers as two rogues fled.

After the battle the party, minus Kaelith and Raltar, made their way back into town to speak with the Kheldegan the dwarf from the day before. While secretly offering him the phony map and turning down a price of 500 gold, the party learned of a small group of town officials who had interrogated an orc a while ago. This orc was the one who told them about the dwarven stronghold. The party left with the map to go speak with Sir Miles Berrick, the mayor of the town first.

Higor showed the phony map to Sir Miles and he was able to identify the fake. He noted that the terrain was correct but the location of the stronghold was wrong. He showed the party where the stronghold should be located which verified to the party that Hadnan's map was indeed accurate. Sir Miles told Higor and Hadnan that if they were going to liberate the stronghold of the orcs, that he would pay a bounty of 25 gold pieces per orc head or scalp. Blasingdell and the surrounding farmland had been the victim of recent orcish raids and Sir Miles wanted to put an end to it. The party brought news of the quest to Kaelith and Raltar who had just finished cooking lunch.
